Izhevsk State Technical University was founded in 1952. The training for Bachelor's Degree, Chartered Engineer's Degree and Master's Degree is carried out in 83 specialities and trends. The University also offers some supplementary courses, including refreshment courses, probation and professional retraining. More than 20,00 students study at 13 faculties.
At present IzhSTU has 6 training and educational buildings in Izhevsk, and branches in Votkinsk, Sarapul, Glazov, Chaikovsky, Kambarka towns. Over 600 teachers are involved in educational process, 286 of them have Ph.D. and Doctors of Science degrees. One of them is a well-known designer of small arms M.T.Kalashnikov.
For 50 years more than 50 thousands of engineers have been trained here. 302 post-graduates and persons working for Doctor's degree study at the University and there are 10 specialized Academic Councils for Candidate's and Doctor's degrees. More than 500 Candidates of Science (Ph.D.) and 100 Doctors of Science have been trained here for the whole period of time.
Scientific schools have been formed in the field of strength, reliability, complex automation, CAD systems, computer science, chemical technology, testing of complex machinery. The university scientific schools direct their efforts to solve the basic problems of machine-building, instrument-making industries, computer science and ecology.
Students of the University live in comfortable hostels in the campus. They have their meals in canteens and snack bars placed in the hostels and university buildings.
The total book fund of the university library is about one million volumes. Computer technology used in science library of IzhSTU, gives a possibility to enter the distributed information resources and allows wide knowledge and information exchange.
Health services for students and employees are provided by the University polyclinic. The University has its own sanatorium-dispensary for 100 persons. It is situated in the picturesque forest near the pond, that forms an original microclimate having favorable influence on holiday-makers.
The students have all the necessary facilities for going in for sports. Over 1,000 students and teachers attend sporting groups and groups of general physical training. The University has a stadium, 8 gyms, a tennis court and a swimming pool at its disposal. For the students and teachers to have a good and substantial rest, there is the University sport camp on the bank of the Kama river.
There is also a Palace of Culture "Integral" for entertainment. The University People's Theatre, the winner of many competitions and festivals, is of great popularity. In estate-museum of P.I.Chaikovsky in Votkinsk has been founded a cultural and educational center of IzhSTU.
