The State Technical University is situated in Izhevk - the capital of the Udmurt Republic.

The distance between Izhevsk and Moscow, the capital of the Russian Federation, is 1129 km. Izhevsk is industrial, commercial, educational and scientific center and an important transport junction. The production of machine-building and metallurgical enterprises is well-known all over the world. An "IZH" trade-mark is on each tenth car and on each second motor-cycle. More than two thirds of spiroid gearboxes, one third of papermaking equipment, over a half of shotguns and carbines, produced in Russia, are manufactured in Izhevsk.

Sporting guns and shotguns, carbines "Medved", "Los", "Sayga" from Izhevsk win medals and diplomas at international exhibitions.

The participants of a transcontinental motor-cycle race which started in Izhevsk reached the capital of the South African Republic - Capetown - on a water-cooled motor-cycle "Izh".

Unique machine-tools and steel, oil-refining and medical equipment, household appliances, woodworking and light industries, high-tech communication systems and electronic equipment, Kalashnikov machine guns and Makarov pistols - this list of Izhevsk 50 enterprises' production is far from being completed.

On the whole more than 430 participants of foreign trade departments cooperate with foreign partners from 71 countries.

The capital of Udmurtia is a scientific and cultural centre. There are departments of research institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 4 higher schools where foreign students may study, 28 vocational secondary schools. more than 90 secondary schools.

There are 5 theaters, 25 libraries, 9 cinemas, 18 clubs and Palaces of Culture, among them the Ice Palace of Sport with a covered skating-rink - one of the few in Russia, 2 big stadiums, 2 municipal museums. There are 20 hotels in Izhevsk, over 100 architectural, historical and cultural monuments, one third of them is under a state protection.

A modern communication system via satellites and communication equipment from Siemens enable residents of Izhevsk to make long-distance calls to almost 150 countries of the world.

There are all types of transportation except for underground. Izhevsk has an international airport and is connected by a regular air- and railway communication with the capital of Russia, Moscow, as well as with other cities of the world.

Both Izhevsk and Udmurtia are open to foreign guests. Almost 70 countries are on the economic partners' list. The number of joint ventures is growing.

The population of Izhevsk is over 650 thousand people.

Izhevsk is famous for small arms. The city dates back to 1761, when a factory was built on the river Izh. On its base an Izhevsk small arms factory was founded later on. The name of Mikhail Kalashnikov, the outstanding small arms designer, is well-known all over the world.

Mikhail Kalashnikov, an Academician of Russian Academy of Rocket and Artillery Sciences, is a professor of Izhevsk State Technical University.

A famous skier Galina Kulakova won the Olimpic games 4 times and is 9 times world champion. Six times champion in international draught Alexey Chizhov is a graduate of Izhevsk State Technical University.
