In the memory of Mikhail Kalashnikov
With great sadness the administration of Kalashnikov Izhevsk State Technical University informs of the passing of Mikhail Timofeevich Kalashnikov, the Honorary Professor of ISTU, Doctor of Technical Sciences.
The name of the remarkable gun-maker Mikhail Timofeevich Kalashnikov is well-known both in Russia and abroad. The veteran of the Great Patriotic War, General Lieutenant, the President of the Union of Russian Rifle-Makers, Hero of the Russian Federation, Double Hero of Socialist Labor, Honored Worker of Industry of the USSR, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of the Udmurt Republic and city of Izhevsk... One can enumerate honorary titles and awards of this remarkable man for a long time, but for students and teachers of Kalashnikov Izhevsk State Technical University he will always remain an example of a Man and a Teacher, having dedicated his life to the protection of his Motherland. According to experts’ assessment, the automatic gun AK-47 created by him has become one of the most used in the world. By the beginning of 1996, 70 to 100 million of guns bearing his name were produced around the world. It is used in 55 countries.
M.T. Kalashnikov, the Honorary Professor of ISTU, Doctor of Technical Sciences, often visited the University and took part in the most significant events of its life. He gave lectures here, here his closest associates studied, his children graduated from this university, the reading hall of the research library was named after M.T. Kalashnikov. He was directly involved in training of young gun-makers.
On February 22, 2012, in the year of the 60th anniversary of the Technical University, by the Order of Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, the University was named as Kalashnikov Izhevsk State Technical University in the honor of M.T. Kalashnikov. The rifle-maker himself, commenting the consent to give his name to the Technical University, said: “It is a great honor for me to give my name to the University, which has trained so many bright, skilled specialists”. He wished only one thing: “Always think if something can be improved, and keep working and working!”
The demise of Mikhail Timofeevich Kalashnikov has become the most grievous loss for all professors, staff and students of Kalashnikov Izhevsk State Technical University. He really was the spirit and life of the University. The memories of this remarkable man will always remain in our hearts. We will do our best to continue traditions of the rifle making mastery. Supported by the best of them, Kalashnikov ISTU will continue training top-ranked rifle-makers for our Motherland.
