Climate and weather

The climate of Izhevsk is moderately continental with short warm summers and rather long cold winters. Average annual indexes: temperature — +3.0 0C, wind speed — 3.6 m/sec, air humidity — 76 %. The warmest month is July with the average temperature of +19 0C. The coldest month is January with the average temperature of −14 0C. So, warm clothes and boots are recommended, which can be purchased upon arrival.

The average temperature in Izhevsk is 0.6 — 0.8 0C higher than in the suburbs. The annual precipitation rate is about 511 mm. The highest being in June — 62 mm, July — 59 mm and August — 67 mm, the lowest in February — 21 mm, March — 22 mm and April — 26 mm. 56 % are rains, 23 % — snow and 21 % mixed (snow with rain). South-western winds prevail in Izhevsk, there are only a few still days. Hurricanes, storms and williwaws are rather rare.

Visa

To get a Russian visa, you have to receive an electronic invitation from the university. The invitations are issued by Federal Migration Service within 30 days from the date of application. To issue the invitation, the following information / documents are required:

  1. Scanned copies of the first passport page and the page with dates of passport issue/expiry valid for at least 1.5 years from the date of entering the Russian Federation (please, send the copies as an attachment to inter@istu.ru).
  2. Copy of the receipt of paying the state duty in the amount of 800 rubles.

IMPORTANT: The invitation will be sent to you only after paying no less than 50 % of the tuition fee for one academic year. Please send us the fee transfer confirmation via the email.

 

Medical services and insurance

Kalashnikov Izhevsk State Technical University provides vast opportunities to improve health. Health services for students and employees are provided by the university polyclinic and health center located on campus. International students need to buy the medical insurance upon arrival, which costs 4,000 rubles (about 57 USD) a year.

 

City transport

Izhevsk has a developed transport network: buses, trolleybuses, trams and taxis.

One trip by bus, trolleybus or tram, irrespective of the distance, costs 30 rubles (about 43 US cents). Banking cards are accepted. Accommodation

The students live in comfortable hostels with cooking and laundry facilities, where they can work in computer rooms, as well as relax after studies. The international students are mainly accommodated in hostel 6. The accommodation cost varies within 20-72 USD/month, depending on the living conditions.

 

Cost of living

The cost of living in Izhevsk is much lower than in Moscow or Saint Petersburg and you will be able to live comfortably without spending large sums.

Russian ruble (RUB) is the official currency of the Russian Federation. The ruble is formally divided into kopecks, the smallest being 50 kopecks. Coins in use are: 50 kopecks, 1 RUB, 2 RUB, 5 RUB, 10 RUB; banknotes in use are: 10 RUB, 50 RUB, 100 RUB, 200 RUB, 500 RUB, 1000 RUB, 2000 RUB and 5000 RUB. Most supermarkets, shops, restaurants and institutions accept banking cards. There are many cash machines located everywhere in the city and in the campus.

Student identity card

  • When you are enrolled to the preparatory course, you will get a plastic student identity card with a special chip. This card will allow you to enter the university buildings as well as the dormitory.
  • When you are enrolled to the regular study program, you will also get a plastic student identity card (in case you don’t have it) with a special chip to enter the university buildings as well as the dormitory. Besides, you will be issued the paper student identity card to benefit from public transport trips, visits to museums, galleries, etc.
