Main areas of cooperation and achievements
Kalashnikov Izhevsk State Technical University is currently developing cooperation in education, research and academic exchanges with 48 foreign universities and research organizations from Europe, Asia, Near East and Africa. Currently over 220 international students from 23 countries are educated at Kalashnikov ISTU, namely from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, China, Egypt, Gambia, Georgia, Germany, Indonesia, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Moldova, Nigeria, Senegal, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Zimbabwe.
On September 18, 2004 Kalashnikov ISTU signed Magna Charta Universitatum in Bologna, Italy. On January 21, 2005 Kalashnikov ISTU was granted a full membership in European University Association alongside with over 850 members from 47 European countries, including 18 Russian higher educational institutions. The university administration regularly participates in international conferences under the auspices of EUA.
Since 2004 Kalashnikov ISTU hosts the biannual International Forum (Education Quality) which comprises the International Conference «Technical Universities: Integration with European and World Systems of Education», Forum of Young Researchers, roundtable discussions, exhibitions. 250 participants, including 63 representatives from 16 foreign universities from Belarus, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Egypt, France, Germany, Hungary, Scotland, Spain, Switzerland, Ukraine and Uzbekistan took part in VI Conference hosted by our university in 2014.
In 2015 Kalashnikov ISTU submitted 6 applications with European universities in the call «Staff mobility for teaching and training» / «Student mobility» in the frameworks of Erasmus+. At present, the applications with Széchenyi István University, Győr, Hungary and Alexander Dubček University of Trenčín, Slovak Republic won. The program envisages the exchanges of students, lecturers and staff of partner universities for studies, internships and reading lectures with the grants provided by EU.
Every year the university awards the title «Doctor Honoris Causa of Kalashnikov ISTU» to foreign partners for the important contribution to the development of cooperation between the universities. The first holders of this title in 2001 became Prof. Jozsef Orban, University of Pécs, Hungary and Dr. Jozef Mudrik, Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, Slovak Republic. At present, 20 foreign professors are Doctors Honoris Causa of Kalashnikov ISTU.
6 bachelor and 1 master study programs of Kalashnikov ISTU have been accredited by Central Evaluation and Accreditation Agency ZEvA, Hannover, Germany.
Kalashnikov ISTU offers a number of study programs in English. From 2013 in the frameworks of cooperation with Egyptian-Russian University – bachelor programs «Civil Engineering», «Mechatronics and Robotics» and «Info-Communication Technologies and Communication Systems», and from 2015 – master program «Project Management in Construction». Master students from Syria and Jordan are currently enrolled to the latter.
Kalashnikov ISTU is realizing 9 double degree programs together with foreign partner universities: Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences (Germany), Egyptian-Russian University (Egypt), Brno University of Technology (Czech Republic), Alexander Dubček University of Trenčín (Slovak Republic), Byelorussian National Technical University (Belarus), Technical University of Wien (Austria). For instance, in 2011 Faculty of Heat Engineering of Kalashnikov ISTU and Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering of Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences, Wolfenbüttel, Germany have developed and implemented the bi-national bachelor program «Water and heat supply for populated areas» which assumes a 1-year study in the partner university with further defense of graduation project and issuing of two diplomas. For the period 2013-2015 the diplomas of Kalashnikov ISTU and Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences were granted to 11 students.
Kalashnikov ISTU took part in the project «Training for the operation of forward-looking and environmentally oriented surface technology companies in Russia» together with Aalen University (Germany), MKV GmbH (Allersberg, Germany) and Zeh Metallveredelungs GmbH (Stuttgart, Germany). In the course of project implementation the International Center of Surface Technologies was founded at Kalashnikov ISTU which was solemnly opened in 2013. The Center deals with training students, making research works and arranging skill update courses for industry.
Two language centers are functioning at the Institute of Professional Translation of Kalashnikov ISTU: Center of Spanish Language and Culture «¡Hola!» opened together with University of Granada (Spain) and Center of Czech Language and Culture opened together with Brno University of Technology (Czech Republic) and South-Moravian Center of International Mobility (Czech Republic).
From 2004 teams of Kalashnikov ISTU programmers won all sorts of medals: silver (Prague, 2004), bronze (Shanghai, 2005) and gold (Banff, Canada, 2008) at world competitions on programming «ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest» sponsored by IBM.
In 2011 Kalashnikov ISTU hosted I Student International Olympiad on Mechanism and Machine Science (SIOMMS) under the auspices of International Federation for the Promotion of Mechanism and Machine Science (IFToMM) (http://siomms.istu.ru). The teams of 17 universities from 8 countries participated in this event. In October 2013 II StudentsInternational Olympiad in Mechanism and Machine Science (SIOMMS – 2013) took place in Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China. The participants of SIOMMS-2013 were 15 teams from the universities of 7 countries: China, Russia, Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia, South Korea and Spain, including the team of Kalashnikov ISTU. Now our team is getting prepared to III Olympiad which will take place in Madrid (Spain) in 2016.
In 2014 Kalashnikov ISTU hosted the International Symposium «Theory and Practice of Gearing – 2014» dedicated to 100th birthday of Faydor Litvin, the founder of the general theory of gearing. The symposium was held under the auspices of International Federation for the Promotion of Mechanism and Machine Science (IFToMM). Over 20 leading experts from Russia, Italy, Spain, UK, China, Japan, USA, Germany, Poland, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Belarus took part in this event.
Kalashnikov ISTU is actively developing the cooperation with educational institutions and research organizations from China. Our university is a member of Association of Sino-Russian Technical Universities (ASRTU) taking an active part in all the events under its auspices. In November 2014 Prof. Boris Yakimovich, Rector of Kalashnikov ISTU was received by Mr. Zhao Gochen, Plenipotentiary Minister, Advisor on Education in Chinese Embassy in Moscow, and in April 2015 Mr. Zhao Gochen repaid the visit to our university. In 2014-2015 Kalashnikov ISTU signed the agreements of cooperation with Harbin Institute of Technology and Nanjing University of Science and Technology. At present 6 graduates of bachelor and master programs of our university are being educated at Harbin Institute of Technology with the scholarships of Chinese Government, and 5 more graduates will start their studies from the next academic year onwards.
Institute of Professional Translation
Institute of Professional Translation was founded in 1998. It provides education in professional translation from English and German languages. The length of time required to complete the study is 2.5 years. The graduates are awarded qualification «Translator in the field of professional communication».
Students of different specialties get education here along with the training in their main specialty. They are taught theoretical basics of a foreign language, spoken and business language, as well as professional translation. Lectures and studies are provided in linguistics, theory of translation, theory of grammar, stylistics and lexicology.
Teachers from Germany, Great Britain, USA are involved in the educational process.
At present about 150 students take classes at the Institute.
