“Theory and Practice of Gearing – 2014”: day-by-day
On 21 January the opening ceremony of the International Symposium “Theory and Practice of Gearing – 2014” took place at Kalashnikov Izhevsk State Technical University.
We can rightly say that the tradition of conferences of the leading experts in the field of gearing with an international participation was born at Izhevsk Technical University in the last millennium. However, this year the Symposium (the eighth) has obtained the respectable status of an International Forum, held under the aegis of the International Federation for the Promotion of Mechanism and Machine Science (IFToMM), Gearing and Transmissions Technical Committee and Russian National Committee on TMM.
Sponsors of this event were JSC “Reduktor” (Izhevsk), JSC “Izhevsk Motozavod “Aksion-Holding”, Technology Research Institute “Progress”, “Mechanic” Ltd.; the exhibition of “Reductor” products worked during the symposium, poster presentations were demonstrated, the Publishing House of Kalashnikov ISTU published the symposium proceedings.
Prof. B. Yakimovich, Rector of Kalashnikov ISTU, Prof. D. Su (UK), Chairman of the Technical Committee on Gearing, Prof. Marco Ceccarelli (Italy), IFToMM President in 2007-2011, V. Arkhipov, Deputy Minister of Education and Science of the Udmurt Republic welcomed the colleagues at the opening ceremony.
In a broad sense, the international format of Izhevsk Symposium is historically conditioned. The conference started its work on the 100th birthday of Prof. Faydor L. Litvin, a professor of Leningrad Institute of Precision Mechanics and Optics, and later a professor of University of Illinois (Chicago, USA), Director and Scientific Advisor of the Gearing Research Center. Prof. E. Trubachev (Kalashnikov ISTU) read the welcome address of F.L. Litvin to the forum participants, received by the Organizing Committee of the symposium.
According to Prof. V. Goldfarb, the Director of the Institute of Mechanics of Kalashnikov ISTU, Vice-President of IFToMM, a student of Litvin and initiator of the symposium: “F.L. Litvin is the founder of the general theory of gearing, in which he was able to foresee the trends in the development of analytical theory of gearing and to create the methods of analysis and synthesis adequate to the capabilities of modern computers”; and according to another participant of the symposium – Prof. Marco Ceccarelli: “F.L. Litvin is the founding father of the international school for gearing. About hundred scientists in gearing became the pupils and followers of Litvin, who are now the authorities and established themselves in gearing both in Russia and the USA, and also educated scientific “grandchildren” and “great grandchildren”of their teacher in different countries.
The first plenary reports of the conference by: Prof. А. Fuentes (Spain), Prof. Е.V. Shalobaeva (Russia), Prof. S.А. Lagutin (Russia), Prof. Е.I. Gutman (USA) were devoted to the scientific activity of F.L. Litvin, his contribution to the development of modern theory of gearing and creation of his scientific school. The surprise to many followers of Litvin’s school was the message from colleagues ofTomsk Polytechnic University, who sent to Izhevsk, “the recognized Russian center of gearing”, a copy of his PhD thesis (defense was held in Tomsk in 1944, where F. Litvin worked during the war).
On the first day of the symposium the Rector’s reception for the participants was held; it was dedicated to the discussion of higher education prospects in the modern world and cooperation of representatives of different universities and countries in solving general management problems, problems of engineering education and effective interaction of the international scientific communities.
The Vice-Rector for International Relations and Accreditation of Kalashnikov ISTU Dr. A.V. Elensky presented our university, told about its strategy and practice in international activities, and offered the colleagues to read the cooperation agreements of our university that could be the beginning of mutually beneficial partnership. The result of this meeting was the first such agreement on future cooperation, signed by Prof. B. Yakimovich, Rector of Kalashnikov ISTU and Prof. A. Dzhomartov (Institute of Mechanics and Machine Science n.a. U.A. Dzholdasbekov, Kazakhstan).
The subject of plenary session on the second day of the forum was devoted to the future of scientific research and production in this area: development of the theory and practice of the power transmissions in particular countries and in the world (Prof. A. Kubo), scientific organization and cooperation of specialists efforts, the status of technical education and engineering profession in the modern world (Prof. M. Ceccarelli), alternative technologies and consumer standards of gearboxes (Prof. D. Su), the establishment and development prospects of Izhevsk Research and Production Center of Gearing at ISTU (Prof. V.I. Goldfarb).
The symposium cultural program comprised the concert of children’s amateur ensemble, vocal studio of our university “Rec.time” and ensemble “Italmas” in the Student Palace “Integral”, and also an excursion to Kalashnikov Museum and sightseeing tour.
Workgroup sessions of the symposium worked until 23 January.
