Kalashnikov ISTU’s team got the 2nd place at Student International Olympiad on Mechanism and Machine Science

SIOMMS-2026-00On April 15 – 18 Shandong University in Weihai (China) hosted the 7th Student International Olympiad on Mechanism and Machine Science (SIOMMS 2026). The Olympiad is organized by International Federation for the Promotion of Mechanism and Machine Science (IFToMM) and is the most important event among the contests in this field.

14 teams (42 students) took part in the Olympiad. They were given 6 original problems in TMM to be solved within 4 hours. Our university was represented by the students of V.A. Shumilov Faculty of Construction, Architecture and Design: Polina GusevaAlena Pegova and Ivan Likhachev.

Summing up the results, the jury pointed out the highest mastery level of most teams. The competition was very tough — among the leaders in the individual competition the score difference between the winner and pursuers was just 0.5 (totally each participant could have scored 60). Only two Europeans — Romanian and Spanish students managed to compete with Chinese students in the individual competition.

In the team competition the places were as follows:

1 place:

  • Tsinghua University (China)
  • Tianjin University (China)
  • Yanshan University (China)

2 place:

  • Harbin Institute of Technology (China)
  • Fuzhou University (China)
  • Kalashnikov ISTU (Russia)
  • Transilvania University of Brașov (Romania)
  • Shandong University in Weihai (China)

3 place:

  • Beijing Jiaotong University (China)
  • Shandong University (China)
  • Taiyuan University of Technology (China)
  • Beihang University (China)
  • Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (Spain)
  • Samara University (Russian)

The 2nd team place of our team, taking into account the tough competition with Chinese students is the utmost achievement. Thus, it has been proved again (the previous Olympiad took place in Kazakhstan in November 2025) that TMM is taught at high level at Kalashnikov ISTU that allows us to successfully compete with European and Chinese universities. The specifics of training our students is that they do not only solve study problems but are also involved in research, writing of articles. This allows developing the required personal qualities and broadening the scientific outlook.

The 8th Student International Olympiad on MMS will take place in Romania in 2028. The experience suggests that apart from training in the subject, the mastering of English should be paid attention to — with all the difference in language systems the Chinese students didn’t complain about not understanding the problem text in English.

At the same time, the organizers envisaged the international research forum during which 4 interesting scientific reports on urgent topics in robotics, mechatronics, automation and mechanization of manufacturing processes were made. The Olympiad participants also visited the university innovation center and observatory.

The cultural program was really amazing: the sightseeing tour of Weihai located at the ocean shore, a visit to the Buddhist temple and journey to Liugong Island.

We congratulate our wonderful team — Polina GusevaAlena Pegova and Ivan Likhachev, as well as Head of Mechanics Department Eduard Krylov and Associate Professor Sergey Devyaterikov who were actively involved in the Olympiad organization and trained our team!

We also express gratitude to Acting Rector of Kalashnikov ISTU Mikhail Pisarev for his support of this project without which it wouldn’t come true.
