The department is the coeval of Izhevsk Mechanical Institute and was established one year before the first graduation of engineers – on September 01, 1956. At that time it was called “Mechanical Engineering Technology”. For over 60 years of its existence the department trained over 4,000 engineers and bachelors in design and technology of machine-building items.

The Department of Metal Technology and Metal Science was created in 1952, the year of our university founding. Currently, the department is training the students of 9 faculties and 35 specialties.
The following laboratories works in the Department: metallographic analysis, heat treatment, mechanical testing, metal forming, welding processes, machining, hand molding, melting and casting in a sand-clay molds, mold materials testing, special methods of molding, fitting, press and mechanical shops.
Research activity
The following research activity in the field of Material Science is conducted:
- Improvement of the structural strengh of the components, obtained by the forging with the use of local area of plactic deformation (rotary extrusion, rolling stamping, back rolling) on the scheme of thermomechanical strengthening (fluid power cylinders, body parts, high-pressure cylinders).
- Forming of the dispersed structure in structural steels and alloys by the scheme of thermomechanical processing with the use of pressing, isothermal and liquid stamping (fittings, pistons of internal combustion engine, sections).
- Implementation of the substructural stregthening effect using induction heating on steels with K60 and K70 for joint parts of oil and gas pipelines.

The department was established in 1954. For over 65 years of its existence the department trained over 2,500 engineers and bachelors in metal forming, over 100 of them were awarded diplomas with honors.
The graduates work practically at all industrial enterprises of the Udmurt Republic and Russia. Many of them became directors of companies and shops, scientists, researchers and university teachers.

For over 60 years of its existence the department trained over 4,000 specialists. The graduates of the department successfully work at practically all machine-building plants of the Udmurt Republic and Russia, in companies, on administrative and public positions. Among its graduates are doctors and candidates of science, honored workers of science and engineering of the Udmurt Republic and Russian Federation. Many of them became conspicuous statesmen, leading scientists, outstanding designers and technologists, head engineers, directors of enterprises.
