2nd Students International Olympiad in MMS
On October 12-13 the second Students International Olympiad in Mechanism and Machine Science (SIOMMS – 2013) took place in Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
SIOMMS is held by the decision of Executive Board of the International Federation for the Promotion of Mechanism and Machine Sciences – IFToMM. The first Student International Olympiad in Mechanism and Machine Science took place in April 2011 in Izhevsk State Technical University with the support of IFToMM, which brings together scientists from 48 countries around the world. Eight Russian and nine foreign teams participated there.
Participants of SIOMMS-2013 were 15 teams from the universities of 7 countries: six teams from China, three teams from Russia (Kalashnikov Izhevsk State Technical University, Chuvash State University n.a. I.N. Ulyanov, Samara State Aerospace university n.a. S.P. Korolev), two teams from Japan and by one team from Taiwan, Malaysia, South Korea, Spain. 47 students carried out competitive tasks.
President IFToMM, Professor Y. Nakamura (University of Tokio) opened and closed the ceremony of Olympiad. Co-chairmen of Organizing Committee were Professor Feng Gao and Professor Guo Wei-Zhong (Jiao Tong University, Shanghai).
The winners of Olympiad in the team scoring were 5 teams from universities of China. The other teams, including the team of Kalashnikov ISTU, were given certificates of participation.
In an individual championship the first 10 places were given to students from universities of China. The winner scored 78% in the maximum.
Both in an individual and team championship the winners were students of Jiao Tong University (Shanghai).
The members of Kalashnikov ISTU team were:
- Dmitry Vakhrushev, gr. 7-72-2 (4th year of study, Institute of Modern Technologies in Mechanical and Automotive Engineering and Metallurgy);
- Aleksey Gerasimov, gr. 7-50-1 (4th year of study, Faculty of Civil Engineering);
- Dmitry Permyakov, gr. 7-50-3 (4th year of study, Faculty of Civil Engineering);
- Pavel Potapov, gr. 7-50-1 (4th year of study, Faculty of Civil Engineering);
- Lyubov Repina, gr. 7-50-3 (4th year of study, Faculty of Civil Engineering);
- Sergey Devyaterikov, Associate Professor of the Department of Theoretical Mechanics and Theory of Machines and Mechanisms;
- Eduard Krylov, Associate Professor of the Department of Theoretical Mechanics and Theory of Machines and Mechanisms.
The team of Kalashnikov ISTU was the youngest Russian team in age and experience, but the participants demonstrated the high level of training, which allows to compete with the teams from world leading technical universities.
Olympiad organizers and the head of IFToMM noted the contribution of Kalashnikov Izhevsk State Technical University in the establishment of Olympiad on Mechanism and Machine Science at the international level. It was admitted that the organization and scientific component of the second Olympiad followed the standards developed during the first SIOMMS-2011 in ISTU.
Along with scientists from Carlos III University (Madrid, Spain) and Technical University in Taipei (Taiwan), the representatives of Kalashnikov ISTU were asked to organize a scientific committee to prepare the next Olympiad in 2015.
During the Olympiad the students and team instructors visited laboratories of robotics and heavy engineering of Jiao Tong University, where they have seen working models of equipment that are used in an educational process, scientific researches, and some of them are made for industry.
Representatives of Russian teams from Samara Aerospace University, Chuvash State University and Kalashnikov ISTU made the following remarks against organizers:
- team instructors were not allowed to check the competitive works of participants;
- texts of tasks were not handed out to teams before the appeal;
- an appeal was held in an under time;
- team instructors of host university participated in appeal, while it was announced that independent experts will check competitive works.
- authors solutions have not been handed out to teams until now.
The representatives of Russian teams note the high scientific level of competitive tasks and believe that if the remarks are taken into account, it will improve the objectivity of the next Olympiad.
