Kalashnikov Izhevsk State Technical University was represented by the rector Prof.Boris Yakimovich.

The forum is one of the most important events in educational and cultural collaboration of two countries. This meeting took course with a slogan “Role of the universities in modern society”

Participants of the symposium discussed problems of student exchange programs and scientific cooperation between universities, mainly in the field of ecology and agriculture. Particularly, Reiko Aoki, Vice-President of Ritsumeikan University, suggested collaboration in the field of hydrogen fuel cells development. At the same time, Elena Kudryashova, Rector of Northern (Arctic) Federal University, suggested Japanese scientists to take part in international programs of the Arctic Regions analysis, which are realized also by the foundation of NArFU.

Furthermore, rectors exchanged opinions about future of university education. Victor Sadovnichy, Rector of Lomonosov Moscow State University, especially pointed out the importance of fundamental education. “Nowadays it’s said a lot about the end of fundamental science, about replacing teachers in 15-20 years with artificial intelligence and replacing traditional paper books with electronic data storage devices. It is explainable, we are moving from one technological mode to another, – mentioned Victor Sadovnichy. – But it’s important to understand that information and knowledge are important things. To turn information into knowledge we need a teacher and university”.

First Forum of Rectors of Russia and Japan took place in Tokyo in May 2009 during the official visit of Vladimir Putin to Japan. Following the results, participants of the meeting decided to have this event regularly.
