31_img02.JPGOn October 20-21, 2016 Carlos III University (Madrid, Spain) hosted III Students International Olympiad on Mechanism and Machine Science (SIOMMS).

International Federation for the Promotion of Mechanism and Machine Sciences (IFToMM) and Kalashnikov ISTU were the originators of the international Olympic Movement in the field of mechanism and machine sciences. Kalashnikov ISTU hosted the first such Olympiad SIOMMS-2011 in April 2011 and established the traditions of organizing such competitions. Two and a half years later in October 2013 the second Olympiad was hosted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China).

In October 2016 SIOMMS-2016 gathered the smartest students from different countries. For the first time, the universities of North and South America (University of Idaho and University of Lima) took part in the event with 15 teams comprising 52 students. The participants were given 5 problems each to be solved in 2 rounds with the break after 3 problems. English was the official language of the Olympiad.

Kalashnikov ISTU team competed with the teams of the most prestigious and high-ranking world universities. In the world of engineering education Shanghai Jiao Tong University is rated together with Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Here we are talking not about “Top 100” but about “Top 5” universities. Other universities – from China, Japan, Germany are also known for their scientific and educational achievements.

The top places in SIOMMS-2016 were taken as follows: 1. University of Seville (Spain), 2. Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China), 3. Bauman Moscow State Technical University (Russia).

Our students of Faculty of Civil Engineering E. Voronov, K. Dolganov, R. Popov, V. Fedotov took the 11th position in the team event with 2.5 points behind RWTH Aachen University (Germany) but above, for instance, several Russian teams and the team of University of Idaho (USA). The best result in the individual event was achieved by Evgeny Voronov who completely solved half of the problems and some points of other problems, and took the 16th position. The students of Kalashnikov ISTU demonstrated the essential intellectual potential and all possibilities to improve the results.

The team of Kalashnikov ISTU took the third position among the Russian universities who participated in the event by a small margin from the second one (37 points against 41), significantly ahead of the teams from Samara State Aerospace University (National Research University) and Kostroma State Technological University. Since there will be no All-Russian Olympiad on TMM this academic year, the results demonstrated by our team can be considered as the third top position in the unofficial competition among the best Russian teams.
