Literary translation «From a word to an action» («No sooner said than done»)

Literary-translation-0On May 14 the participants and winners of I Annual international Contest of Literary Translation «From a word to an action» were officially awarded in the National Library of the Udmurt Republic.

This year the contest was arranged for the first time, but, nevertheless, 78 people in the age from 10 to 61 years took part in it! Those were schoolchildren, students in linguistics and not, professional and non-professional translators from different Russian cities (Izhevsk, Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, Tyumen, Sharanga settlement in Nizhny Novgorod region, Igra settlement in Udmurt Republic), and other countries (Slovakia, Croatia, Egypt, Angola, Hungary).

The jury analyzed 155 translations of prosaic and poetic texts in the following blocks: translation from English, German, French, Spanish, Czech, Udmurt (to be selected) into Russian. A special section of the contest was the section of translation of prosaic and poetic texts from Russian into the participants’ native languages (Croatian, Armenian, Arabic, Slovak, Portuguese, Hungarian, etc.), where international students and teachers whose mother tongue is not Russian could check their abilities.

57 diplomas were given to the laureates and prize winners in the nominations: «Professional writers», «Novice writers», «First steps in writing», «Prize winners in nominations». The works of the laureates and prize winners were published in the literary and artistic journal «Territory of Life», which is accredited internationally and sent to the leading libraries in Russia and Europe. The participants from other countries and cities who could not take part in the awarding ceremony will receive the relevant documents electronically and by post.

The contest organizers were Kalashnikov Izhevsk State Technical University (Department of Russian Language as Foreign) and Writers Guild of the Udmurt Republic, among the contest co-organizers were University of Zadar (Croatia), Juraj Dobrila University of Pula (Croatia), JCMM, z. s. p. o. (Brno, Czech Republic).

Deep gratitude to the organizers’ team and the jury for the intensive work, to the participants — for personal involvement and active interest to the Russian language and translation activity!

The already familiar and new participants are invited to take part in the next contest tour, which will be held in October 2022 — April 2023.
