The Udmurt Republic
The Udmurt Republic is a sovereign republic of the Russian Federation. In 2008 Udmurtia celebrated the 450th anniversary of its joining the Russian Federation. It is situated in the western part of the Middle Urals between the rivers Kama and Vyatka. The Republic covers an area of 42,100 sq. km that is 0.25 % of the total area of the Russian Federation. The population of Udmurtia is over 1,600 million people. There are 6 cities: Izhevsk, Votkinsk, Glazov, Mozhga, Sarapul and Kambarka, and 25 rural regions in the Republic. The Head of the Republic is Alexander Solovyov. In accordance with the Constitution of the Udmurt Republic, the Supreme Council of the Udmurt Republic and the Council of Ministers, the government of the Udmurt Republic, are the supreme bodies of state power and administration. The Udmurt Republic has its national symbols – an emblem, flag and hymn. The climate is temperate continental with an average temperature in January -15.0°C. Summer is warm here, with an average temperature in July +22.0 °C. Udmurtia is a native land of the great Russian composer Peter Tchaikovsky. So, it is not incidental that Izhevsk has become the place where annual international music festivals are held.

ISTU
Kalashnikov Izhevsk State Technical University was founded in 1952 in the period of intensive industrial development when there was an increasing demand in highly qualified engineers, capable of managing production processes. On the date of its 60th anniversary it was named after the legendary small arms designer Mikhail Kalashnikov.
At present Kalashnikov ISTU is a leading higher educational institution in the region and one of the leading technical schools in Russia, a training center of engineers and academics.
Kalashnikov Izhevsk State Technical University is a signatory of Magna Charta Universitatum in Bologna, Italy and a full member of European University Association (EUA). 6 bachelor and 1 master study programs of Kalashnikov ISTU have been accredited by Central Evaluation and Accreditation Agency ZEvA, Hannover, Germany with the possibility to issue internationally recognized diploma supplements.
Kalashnikov ISTU has 5 branches in towns of Udmurt Republic and neighboring regions, namely: Votkinsk, Sarapul, Glazov, Kambarka and Tchaikovsky.
At present ISTU comprises 3 faculties and 7 institute, they are:

Over 760 lecturers are involved in the teaching process, 114 of them are Doctors of Science and/or Professors, 379 – Candidates of Science (PhD) and/or Associate Professors.
Kalashnikov ISTU is entitled to provide educational services in 47 programs of bachelor studies, 37 programs of master studies, 7 specialties of higher professional education, 13 specialties of PhD and Doctoral studies, 14 programs of secondary professional education, as well as the programs of supplementary education (skill-update courses and professional retraining, additional qualification “Professional Translator”, courses for prospective students). Currently Kalashnikov ISTU educates over 12,000 students, including 275 international students. The classes and research works are conducted in 8 buildings, the new one opened on 1 September 2009.
For over 60 years more than 65,000 engineers have been trained at Kalashnikov ISTU. There are 4 specialized Academic Councils for PhD and DSc degrees here.
Scientific schools have been organized in the field of strength, reliability, complex automation, CAD systems, computer science, chemical technology, testing of complex machinery. The university scientific schools direct their efforts to solve the basic problems of machine-building, instrument-making industries, computer science and ecology. Researchers of Kalashnikov ISTU successfully participate in grant and scholarship programs together with colleagues from partner universities both local and foreign.
The university has all modern facilities to assist students in their studies and research. Over 2,500 PCs and workstations of Kalashnikov ISTU are combined into over 80 LANs linked to Internet via the university Internet-portal.
In the frameworks of innovative activities the electronic library of Kalashnikov ISTU, that currently comprises over 500,000 entries, was implemented and successfully functions. In virtual laboratories of the university young specialists can do research, as well as exchange information with their colleagues all over the world via Internet.
Kalashnikov Izhevsk State Technical University has been constantly developing its international relations. Academic mobility programs are implemented and promoted.
Students of the university live in comfortable hostels on campus. They have their meals in canteens and snack bars placed in the university buildings.
Health services for students and employees are provided by the university polyclinic. The university has its own health center for 100 persons.
The students have all the necessary facilities for going in for sports. The university has a stadium, 8 gyms, a tennis court and a brand new swimming pool at its disposal. For the students and personnel to have a good and substantial rest, there is the university sport camp on the bank of the river Kama.
There is also a Palace of Culture “Integral” for entertainment. It is the venue of conferences and exhibitions, as well as multiple amusement festivities. The university Municipal Theater “Young Man”, the winner of many competitions and festivals, is very popular. In estate-museum of Peter Tchaikovsky in Votkinsk the cultural and educational center of Kalashnikov ISTU has been founded.
