Sport

Kalashnikov ISTU has all the necessary sport facilities for students and employees: sport halls, a tennis court, a stadium with artificial covering, a ski center, gyms, aerobics halls, a swimming pool and a sauna. Sport days and various competitions form an integral part of students’ life. There is also a sport center «Galevo» located in the pine forest outside Izhevsk on the bank of the river Kama with the canteen providing 3 meals a day, sport grounds for football, volleyball, basketball and badminton, as well as a sauna.

Meals

Shpargalka

The meals can be taken in café «Shpargalka» («cheat note» in English), which is very popular among the students. The prices are quite democratic here, thus, the lunch price varies within 1.5-2 USD. Also, there a newly open café «Zachetka» («student’s record book» in English) in building 1, as well as snack bars in all educational buildings. The students can also cook their meals in the hostels.

Accommodation

The students live in comfortable hostels with cooking and laundry facilities, where they can work in computer rooms, as well as relax after studies. The international students are mainly accommodated in hostel 6. The accommodation cost varies within 20-80 USD/month, depending on the living conditions.

The university campus is located in picturesque outskirts of Izhvesk near the park and forestry area. It comprises 8 educational buildings, 6 students’ hostels, student palace «Integral», health center, polyclinic, stadium, swimming pool, etc.

General

Kalashnikov Izhevsk State Technical University was founded in 1952. On 22 February 2012 Izhevsk State Technical University celebrated its 60th anniversary and was named after Mikhail Kalashnikov, a legendary designer of small arms and Honorary Professor of ISTU.

More than 12,000 students, including 275 international, study at 3 faculties and 7 institutes of the university.

The university accepts students in mechanical and instrumentation engineering, civil and power engineering, housing and utility infrastructure, information science and computer engineering, natural sciences, economics, architecture, design, and humanities for bachelor degree – in 39 programs, for master degree – in 31 programs, for specialist diploma programs – in 5 specialties, and for PhD degree – in 10 programs.

Kalashnikov ISTU offers 6 bachelor and 1 master programs in English, as well as the preparatory course for those wishing to proceed with Russian-taught programs.

Academic Ranking of World Universities-European Standard ARES-2019

Kalashnikov Izhevsk State Technical Universitygot the 61st position in Academic Ranking of World Universities-European Standard ARES-2019 with the ranking «BBB». The aim of the university ranking ARES-2019 is to evaluate the ability of the universities to provide students with the required knowledge, participate in research activities and actively communicate with prospective employers. Universities with ranking «B» (BBB+, BBB, BB+, BB, B+, B) are characterized by the reliable quality of teaching, research activities and employability of graduates.

 

Expert RA ranking

Kalashnikov Izhevsk State Technical Universityis on the 66th position in the annual ranking of Russian universities made by the ranking agency RAEX in 2019. The statistic data, as well as the poll results of 60,000 respondents: representatives of academic and scientific circles, students and alumni, employers were applied in its preparation.

Famous personalities

udm-15    Petr Tchaikovsky (25.04.1840-25.10.1893) – a Russian composer of the romantic period, whose works are among the most popular music in the classical repertoire. Born in Votkinsk, he was the first Russian composer whose music made a lasting impression internationally, bolstered by his appearances as a guest conductor in Europe and the United States. He was honored in 1884 by Emperor Alexander III, and awarded a lifetime pension. In the town of Votkinsk there is the Museum-Estate where the family of P. Tchaikovsky lived.

Mikhail Kalashnikov (10.11.1919-23.12.2013) – an outstanding small arms designer, DSc in Engineering, Lieutenant-General. He is most famous for developing the AK-47 assault rifle and its modification, the AKM and AK-74, as well as the PK machine gun and RPK light machine gun. Kalashnikov was, according to himself, a self-taught tinkerer who combined innate mechanical skills with the study of weaponry to design arms that achieved battlefield ubiquity. Even though Kalashnikov felt sorrow at the weapons’ uncontrolled distribution, he took pride in his inventions and in their reputation for reliability, emphasizing that his rifle is «a weapon of defense» and «not a weapon for offense».

Galina Kulakova (born on 29.04.1942) – a Soviet former cross-country skier, arguably the best skier on distances shorter than 10 km in the early 1970s. She is 4 times Olympic champion, 9 times World champion, World cup winner, 39 times Russian champion, Honored master of sports, Honored coach.  For her achievements she was awarded Order of Lenin and Badge of Honor. She was also awarded the silver Olympic Order in 1984 by the International Olympic Committee President Juan Antonio Samaranch. Galina Kulakova ended her sports career in 1982.

Nadezhda Durova (1783-1866) – the daughter of Andrei Durov, Governor of Sarapul. In 1806 she escaped from home dressed as a young horseman and took part in the Patriotic war against Napoleon under the name of Aleksandr Sokolov and later – Aleksandrov. She was the first lady – Russian officer, Commander of Saint George’s Cross and orderly of Field-Marshal Mikhail Kutuzov.

Olga Knipper-Chekhova (21.09.1868-22.03-1959) – a famous Russian actress born in Glazov, People’s artist of Russia, wife of the famous Russian writer Anton Chekhov. She was one of the founders of Moscow Art Theater, among many other roles, she 600 times played Ranevskaya on stage in Chekhov’s play «The Cherry Orchard».

 

Sights

Tourist complex of Udmurtia includes about 2.5 thousand objects. There are more than 150 accommodation places for tourists, 32 museums, over 2 thousand historical and cultural monuments, natural parks, reserves and monuments, sports complexes. Rural tourism is also developing. The reception of tourists in rural areas is organized by about 150 private households.

The main sights of Udmurtia:

  • Architectural and Ethnographic Museum «Ludorvai» located not far from Izhevsk, examples of old Russian and Udmurt buildings
  • Museum-Estate of Petr Tchaikovsky in Votkinsk
  • Sarapul – the town where you can feel the atmosphere of pre-revolutionary Russia; the pearl of Sarapul is the villa of the merchant Bashenin
  • Old Believers villages in the north of the Udmurt Republic and Siberian tract museum (Bakcheevo, Igra region), the place where you can feel like a convict of the Russian Empire times
  • Museum-Reserve «Idnakar» near Glazov
  • Zuevy Springs – the southernmost point of Udmurtia where the Kama spreads almost to the horizon, pilgrims from all over Russia come here to visit the Holy and Gremyachiy springs with healing water
  • Mount Baigurez – the hill on the bank of the Cheptsa River, one of the most beautiful places in Udmurtia with a magnificent view of the surroundings
  • Baba Yaga Residence in the village of Kotlovka in Grahovo region, on the bank of the Yaga River (Baba Yaga is a character (a forest witch) of Russian folk tales) and Tol Babai Residence in Sharkan (Tol Babai is the Udmurt Father Frost)
  • Holy Assumption Convent in Perevoznoye village in Votkinsk region
